Coronavirus: Ghanaian Medical Doctor Arrested For Using Unapproved Routes Into The Country

A Ghanaian medical doctor has been arrested among a number of persons that used unapproved routes into the country, the Ghana Immigration Service has said.

According to the service, there has been an increase in illegal immigration into the country amidst coronavirus.

President Akufo-Addo in a late-night address on Saturday announced the closure of Ghana’s points of entry — land, sea and air which took effect at 00:00GMT on Sunday.

The service revealed that the culprits are both foreigners and Ghanaians who tried to enter the country illegally for various purposes.

So far, five Ghanaians, nine Beninois, three Nigerians, a Malian and three Ivoirians have also been made at the Elubo border.

Laud Kwesi Ofiri Afrifa, Deputy Controller General of the Service told the press on Tuesday that the medical doctor will be prosecuted after the mandatory quarantine as he tests negative to the virus.

“He is a medical doctor and he should know better,” Mr. Afrifa stressed.

Meanwhile, 12 Okada riders have been arrested trying to smuggle people into the country.
