The Ministry of Education has announced January 4, 2021, as the official re-opening date for all schools including International Schools.
Education Ministry Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha made the announcement on Monday, hours after holding brief with Education Sector stakeholders.
After the meeting, CS Magoha announced several key dates which signal the end the close to 1-year closure of schools on account of the coronavirus pandemic:
Pre Primary 1 & 2; Grade 1, 2 & 3; Class 5, 6 & 7; and Form 1, 2 & 3 learners will start their Term 2 on 4th January, 2021 and end on 19th March 2021 together with the Grade 4 and candidate classes (Class 8 and Form 4)
Although the calendar for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) and Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) was not released, CS Magoha announced that non-candidate classes will proceed for a 7-week break to allow for the administration, marking and grading of the examinations.
Grade 4 and incoming Form 1 (Class 8 graduates) learners will stay at home as other learners complete their Term 3.
All 4-year-olds will be expected to join PP1 in July 2021, while Grade 4 pupils will transition into Grade 5.
At the same time, teachers who are aged 58 years and above, and especially those with pre-existing conditions have been advised to work from home as much as possible.
Teachers Service Commission CEO Dr. Nancy Macharia said such teachers can be assigned other critical roles such preparing schemes of work, learning materials among other duties.
The Ministry of Education has also set up a COVID-19 incidence reporting tool which will allow teachers monitor and report cases in real time.
The tool can be accessed via USSD on any network by dialing *202*07#.
Alternatively, teachers can access a 24-hour by teacher’s scheme hotline by dialing 1528 which will enhance quicker management and coordination of COVID-19 cases.
