Nigerian Government Still Puts WASSCE On Hold Over Coronavirus

WASSCE is trending on Twitter and this comes as no surprise as the much anticipated West Africa Senior School Certificate Examinations is set to come off after a long wait.

This comes after WAEC announced that the examination would commence from Monday, July 20, 2020, with Project Work for Visual Arts candidates, while the theory papers will start from August 3, 2020, until September 5, 2020, when the five-week-long examination will be brought to an end with Principles of Cost Accounting and Technical Drawing.

However, the Nigerian Government seems not to agree with the decision taken by the West African Examination Council.

The government believes that, the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic still serves as a threat to the safety of students and is therefore not ready to gamble with the lives of its future leaders. Initially, the Federal Government had decided to allow for the resumption of schools within Nigeria but has decided to rescind its earlier decision.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, disclosed this while speaking with journalists at the end of the Federal Executive Meeting presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday.

Adamu said that Nigerian schools will not reopen any time soon until it was safe to do so because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

He also made it clear that no school would participate in the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations earlier scheduled to take place between July and August.
