Woman Arrested For Keeping The Remains Of Her Dead Baby In A Freezer For 27 Years

A Tennessee, US woman is set to appear in court this week for arraignment on charges of abuse of a corpse for allegedly keeping the remains of a baby in a storage unit for close to three decades.

Police arrested Melissa McCann, 62 after the remains of a newborn baby were found in a storage unit she had reportedly rented for 27 years, District Attorney Craig Northcott said in a press release.

McCann was indicted by a Coffee County grand jury Dec. 10 for two counts of abuse of a corpse. Additional indictments could be sought if investigators establish evidence of further crimes.

The Watts-N-Storage unit was rented by McCann for the sole purpose of housing her full-term newborn baby’s remains, Northcott said.

McCann rented the unit days after delivering the child in March 1994, authorities said.

The alleged corpse abuser is slated to appear before the Coffee County Circuit Court on Dec. 17 around 9 a.m., Northcott said.
