When it was renovated in 2019, retired President Uhuru Kenyatta envisioned it as an epic world seafront. This would draw both local and international tourists to enjoy the tranquility, cool breeze, and Swahili cuisine.
The country’s largest public park, sited on a 26-acre waterfront space overlooking the Indian Ocean, can easily accommodate up to 25,000 people and has been a prime spot for both local and national events.
Five years after its reopening, the Sh460 million Mama Ngina Waterfront Park has devolved into a brothel, with locals flocking to the area to trade sexual favors.
This has been revealed by the establishment’s manager, Mr. Ali Noor, who accused a group of Kenyans of having turned the recreational facility into a brothel.
Mr. Noor persuaded the National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Tourism and Wildlife to send tourists’ police to the area to increase security and restore the waterfront’s fading glory.
“People bring their cars to the park and park them for sexual adventures.” This has become the norm, and dealing with the problem is incredibly hard for us. “This place is really very popular, particularly on weekends. Mr. Noor told reporters.
One of the officials told the MPs that they discovered the crime after noticing couples entering the facility and parking their cars, which began shaking after a few moments.
He stated that this prompted police officers stationed in the area to begin ‘knocking on the windows of dubious vehicles’ in a bid to put a stop to the indecent acts in public.
But even so, he noted that now the cases have decreased as a result of increased patrols in the park and the establishment of a police station in the area.
“However, since police began patrolling near the parking lot, the cases have dropped dramatically,” Mr. Noor added.
The National Assembly Departmental Committee on Tourism and Wildlife, on the other hand, warned the police not to harass visitors to the area.
