The Minister of Communication, Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has directed the state broadcaster, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) to consolidate its current six channels to three within sixty (60) days.
In a letter addressed to the Director-General of GBC, the minister said the decision was to free space on the National Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) platform.
The state broadcaster currently operates six TV channels namely GTV, GTV Sports+ (a channel for sports), GBC 24 (a 24-hour news TV channel) and GTV Life (religion and culture channel), GTV Govern (a governance channel), Obonu TV (a channel for the people of Greater Accra and window for the Ga-Dangbe). When the directive takes effect, GBC will be left with three.
“You will, therefore, be required to consolidate your programming in line with this directive,” the June 26 letter read.
It further stated that after the planned future expansion of capacity on the network, which has been delayed by the pandemic and the uncertainties generated in global supply chains, the GBC will be allocated additional channels.
However, the Ministry’s directives will have to be effected within 60 days.
