President Akufo-Addo Forfeits His 3 Months Salary To Fight Coronavirus

President Akufo-Addo has directed the Controller and Accountants General Department to divert his subsequent salaries to the newly-created COVID-19 Fund for the next three months.

The president announced the creation of the fund in his fourth presidential address on Friday, March 27.

He said in the address that salaries for the months of April, May and June are to be paid into the fund’s account.

“The fund which is managed by an independent board of trustees and chaired by former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, to receive contributions and donations from the public to assist in the welfare of the needy and the vulnerable, …” the president said.

“I have directed the Controller and Accountant General to pay my next three months’ salary, i.e. April, May and June, into this Fund,” he added.

Meanwhile, President Akufo-Addo has ordered a lockdown in three of Ghana’s biggest cities including Accra, Tema and Kumasi.
