A police officer is currently being held by police in Mogotio, Baringo County after allegedly raping a suspect in a holding cell in late April.
His arrest followed a complaint made by a 23-year-old woman who was being held for child neglect at Mogotio police station.
The victim, in a police report seen by Citizen Digital, accused Officer Erick Machuki of raping her at around 9pm on April 27, 2022. Machuki is said to have been on cell sentry duties when he allegedly forced himself on the victim.
The woman reported the incident to police constable Joselyne Jepkoech who took over cell sentry duties from Machuki on the morning after the incident allegedly transpired.
“The reportee was being held at the station as from Tuesday, April 26 as a remandee for the offence of child neglect, awaiting children’s office report at the Eldama Ravine court on May 4,” the police report reads in part.
Investigations into the incident were quickly launched while the woman and the suspect were moved to Mogotio Sub-County Hospital for medical evaluation.
“Following the evidence on record the officer has been arrested and he will be charged for the offence of rape,” the police report said.
The suspect will be arraigned on Wednesday May 4, 2022.
