Did you know Kenyans assembled the first ever African car?
The ‘Nyayo Car’ was not only Kenya’s first independently developed car but also the first in Africa as a whole. The project was started by former Kenyan president Daniel Arap Moi. He is said to have ordered the construction of a local car with the legendary words “do it…no matter how ugly or slow it may be.”
But things didn’t quite work out as expected. In 1991, when the cars’ big public unveiling happened at Kenya’s Kasarini Sports Complex, only two of the five cars were working. The president then came to drive one of the running cars around the track but it couldn’t quite make the whole 400m. It broke down after just a few meters. Damn.
After several more attempts to re-assemble the car, the government gave up and the project was shelved. Check out photos of the Nyayo Car.
