The National Democratic Party (NDP) has denied reports that its flagbearer Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings has pulled out of the 2020 elections.
This follows reports circulating in the local media earlier today which suggested the former First Lady had withdrawn from the presidential election.
However, at a press conference on Monday, November 23, 2020, the NDP rubbished reports that its presidential candidate has stepped down.
Nana Konadu is, therefore, set to contest for the presidency against the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akufo-Addo, the National Democratic Congress‘ (NDC) John Mahama and others in the December polls.
“This is fake news and it should be regarded as such, Our leader has not had any link to that effect,” Alhaji Frimpong told journalists.
This comes after Brigadier-General Joseph Nunoo-Mensah (Rtd) urged Nana Konadu not to contest in the December polls as a sign of respect to her late husband.
The former Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces believes stepping down will be the best form of respect she can give to her late husband.
“If I were her, I would not stand. If she was to ask me, I’d say ‘Madam, it is okay, call it off as a respect to your husband,’” Mr Nunoo-Mensah told Joy News.
“The wife [Nana Konadu] should save him [J.J. Rawlings] from that embarrassment by pulling out [of the election.”
Meanwhile, Nana Konadu’s husband, Jerry John Rawlings, passed away at the age of 73 in the early hours of Thursday, November 12, 2020.
He is said to have died at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, where he was on admission after falling sick.
The former president ruled Ghana for two decades, first as through a coup and later becoming a democratically elected President.
