Citizens of lagos were concerned as a loud explosion was heard this afternoon especially in areas like ikeja, surulere, ajao estate, amuwo-odofin and other nearby places.
Some said they thought it was a thunder strike and others thought it was a pipeline explosion. Apparently, it was a gas explosion in Omonile, Abula Addo near Trade Fair, in Festac town.
The massive blast has reportedly rocked neighboring areas, sparking a massive blaze that has destroyed nearby buildings including a school.
An eyewitness narrated that a tipper offloading sand caught fire, which spread to a nearby pipeline, triggering the blast.
The director-general of LASEMA, Dr Femi Osanyintolu confirmed that the pipeline had earlier been vandalized by unknown persons.
Many nearby houses have been destroyed by the blaze while the explosion damaged buildings around the area and its environs.
The Lagos State Fire Service says there are buildings on fire in Ado Soba, Abule-Ado, Satellite town, aspanda and Amuwo-Odo.
The chairman of the local government area, Mr Valentine Buraimoh confirmed that some children have been rescued from the collapsed school building. The principal of the school has been confirmed dead.
Other buildings of others schools; CIC and Archangels schools have been damaged badly.
