The gay debate has been sparked once again after Education CS George Magoha spoke about gay students in boarding schools.
What many Kenyans might not know is that despite our very traditional views vis-a-vis homosexuality, in a survey released in 2016, Kenya ranked number one primarily with searches for ‘gay s3x pics’ and ‘gay p0rn pics’.
(And that was before Safaricom home fibre and Zuku were at a majority of the homes in urban centres!)
This is despite gay s3x being illegal in Kenya with the punishment for homosexual s3x between men being 14 years’ imprisonment, which goes up to 21 years if it is not consensual. The law only applies to men.
Let’s not forget that 92% of Kenyans reportedly claim to believe that homosexuality is ‘unacceptable’.
The top 5 countries in this list with the exception of South Africa have laws that punish homosexuals for the act of sex between same-sex couples.
The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA) which compiles an annual report on laws that either criminalise, or recognise and protect, same-sex relations around the world found that; in 34 African countries same-sex sexual acts are illegal.
