A motorist escaped death by a whisker after being attacked by marauding elephants along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu highway.
In the incident that happened on the night of Wednesday, December 29, John Ndung’u was driving home when he suddenly encountered a stray tusker that was crossing the road.
Speaking to the press, Ndung’u said he tried to brake but the jumbo approached his car and trampled it. While still trapped inside the vehicle, the helpless motorist said the elephant, in turn, laid on it smashing its windows and the bonnet.
Luckily, although he sustained minor injuries, Ndung’u survived and was rushed to the Naivasha sub-county hospital by well-wishers.
The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) officers said the five animals escaped from Maasai Mara National Reserve in Narok and were en route to the Aberdares. The elephants are said to have destroyed property, including agricultural crops, of unknown value in Lakeview and Hellsgate wards. The incident caused a huge traffic snarl-up on the highway.
