Duncan-Williams Reveals A Ghanaian President Got Very Angry With Him For Praying For Opposition Party

Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams has revealed that a president of Ghana got upset with him just because he prayed for the opposition party at some point in time.

Without giving any specifics, the founder of Action Chapel International told the congregation on Sunday, 24 April 2022 during his sermon:

โ€œThere was a time there was a president in this country; myself and some men of God from outside came and we went to visit him and he was very hostile toward meโ€ but โ€œsweet and nice to everybody else.โ€

โ€œVery hostile toward meโ€, he stressed, adding that the president โ€œdidnโ€™t even acknowledge me.โ€

โ€œThis is a guy that I prayed for [for] many years even when he was in opposition,โ€ he noted.

โ€œI prayed for him; [he] comes [to] visit me many times; we were that close; he visits me and all thatโ€, Archbishop Duncan-Williams said.

โ€œHe was so hostile and after, when we were leaving his office, I allowed everybody to go and I concerned him and I said: โ€˜Mr. President, whatโ€™s going on here?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t even allow security; I said: โ€˜Mr. President, something is wrong; whatโ€™s happening? I donโ€™t like your countenance toward meโ€™. And I said: โ€˜Something is not rightโ€.

โ€œHe said: โ€˜You are right about it; Iโ€™m very upset with you, and I said: โ€˜Talk to me Mr. President; if you are upset, talkโ€™โ€.

โ€œAnd he told me, and I found out that somebody that was so very close to me in my church went to slander me, went to lie and said I was praying for the then-oppositionโ€, Archbishop Duncan-Williams recalled.

โ€œAnd I said: โ€˜Mr. President, it is true: I pray for the opposition and I pray for [the] government; what is wrong? I said: โ€˜I prayed for you when you were in opposition, so, why are you angry with me?โ€™โ€

โ€œYea, itโ€™s the truth: I pray for [the] government, I pray for [the] opposition. Thatโ€™s what the Bible says we should do. 1 Timothy 2 from verse 1 going to verse 4. And I said: โ€˜Yes, itโ€™s true: I prayed for the opposition just as I prayed for you when you were in opposition, so, whatโ€™s your problem?โ€™โ€

โ€œHe said: โ€˜You know something; youโ€™re right, youโ€™re right.โ€

โ€œI said: โ€˜Mr. President, youโ€™re better than this. And I walked off. I just walked off.โ€

Quoting the Bible to buttress his point, Archbishop Duncan-Williams said:

โ€˜I exalt, therefore, that first of all supplication, prayers, intercession and giving of thanks be made for all men irrespective of their religious background; for kings, for all that are in authority and if we do that, weโ€™ll live a quiet and a peaceable life in all Godliness and honesty,โ€ adding: โ€œThat is the only way Godliness and honesty and peace of any country is maintained when prayers go up for those in authority; not when we criticize them. For it is written: โ€˜Speak no evil of the ruler of my people.โ€

Archbishop Duncan-Williams, who has been preaching for almost 45 years, said the Bible injuncts men of God to pray for the leaders of the nation rather than criticize them.

โ€œThe Bible didnโ€™t call us to speak evil of rulers. It didnโ€™t call us to criticize the people in authority but it says: โ€˜Pray for them, for this is good and acceptable in the sight of God, our Saviour.โ€

โ€œWe are not anointed to attack and criticize people in authority; thatโ€™s not my assignment. The pulpit is not to attack leaders or to criticize leaders, itโ€™s to pray and if you believe in God, then pray.โ€
