Kenya has donated a total of Ksh.300 million to the African Union COVID-19 Response Fund and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).
In a statement by Ababu Namwamba, the Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Ministry of Foreign Affairs the donation is part of a pledge by President Uhuru Kenyatta to help in combating the novel coronavirus in the continent.
“On our part as a member of the Africa Union and person to the pledge made by President Uhuru Kenyatta, Kenya has donated $2 million (Ksh.200 million) to the Africa Union COVID-19 response fund and pledged a further $ 1 million (Ksh.100 million) to support the Africa CDC,” said Mr. Namwamba.
The donation, according to the CAS, is within the framework of the decision by the African Union to establish a coordinated continental strategy in combating COVID-19.
Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has already pledged to contribute medical equipment worth $4 million (Ksh.400 million) to assist African countries and another $2 million dollars to the Africa CDC.
“Ieleweke sisi sio wa kupokea tu, tunapokea lakini tunasaidiana (let it be known that we do not just receive, we also help others) in the real spirit of continental and global solidarity,” said Mr. Namwamba.
The African Union COVID-19 Response Fund was established by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat in March 2020, “with the aim of strengthening the continental response to COVID-19.”
The fund, according to the African Union website, will “boost the capacity of the Africa CDC to support response to public health emergencies across the continent; support the procurement and distribution of essential COVID-19 medical equipment and supplies and mobilize rapid response by Member States; and Mitigate its socio-economic and humanitarian impact on African populations.”
