In an effort to seek an audience with presidential candidates William Ruto and Raila Odinga, comedian Eric Omondi posted a video of himself setting ablaze an Identification card.
The ID card had an image resembling that of Eric, and other details that are usually on National Identification cards for all Kenyans above 18 years.
While burning it, Lucky Dube’s song ‘Prisoner’ was playing on the background.
It is not clear whether Eric set his original ID card ablaze, or it is a mock ID card.
Did you know that setting an ID card ablaze is an offence according to the Penal Code?
Section 133 of the Penal Code stipulates that destruction of a statutory document
“Any person who, knowingly and without lawful authority or excuse, destroys, mutilates, defaces, alters, abandons or fails to preserve any statutory document is guilty of an offence and is liable to a fine not exceeding five thousand shillings or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months, or to both,” the act stipulates.
It further explains the ‘statutory documents’ as;
“Any licence, permit, identity card, record or return or certificate of or relating to employment, and any other record of or document establishing status, identity, qualifications, service, authorization, eligibility or entitlement, made, granted, given or issued under and for the purposes of, and in a form prescribed by, any written law, and being of current validity, and includes any part thereof, and any copy thereof made, granted, given or issued as aforesaid.”
