Here Is All You Need To Know About The 5 Teams That Will Be Representing Africa At The World

With just 3 days to the opening ceremony of the 2018 World Cup in Russia, we present to you the 5 teams that will be representing team Africa at this year’s event.

1. EGYPT (Pharaohs)

FIFA RANKING: 45

WORLD CUP APPEARANCES: Team Egypt has only been to the World Cup twice before, in 1934 and 1990. They have never made it past the group stages of the World Cup.

COACH: Egypt replaced famous coach Hassan Shehata who led them to win 3 consecutive African Cups and have opted for HÉCTOR CÚPER, former Valencia, and Internazionale, the coach who led the Pharaohs to the 2017 CAF Africa Cup of Nations final.

STAR PLAYER: Egypt will be bidding their hopes on phenomenal Liverpool star, Mo Salah who netted a remarkable 71 percent of
the Pharaohs’ goals in Russia 2018 qualifying games.

GROUP A: Russia, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.

 

2. MOROCCO (Atlas Lions)

FIFA RANKING: 41

WORLD CUP APPEARANCES: The Kingdom Of Moroccan has made 4 appearances at the World Cup, 1970, 1986, 1994 and 1998. Their best performance came in 1986 when they made it to the Round of 16.

COACH: Former Zambian and Ivorian coach Herve Renard who was the first coach to win the CAF Africa Cup of Nations with different countries, will be leading the Atlas Lions into this year’s world cup.

STAR PLAYER: Medhi Benatia is the star boy for this Morocco team. The powerful, athletic and talented player is one of the best defenders in Africa. The Juventus center-back is definitely one to look out for.

GROUP B: Portugal, Spain and Iran.

 

3. NIGERIA (Super Eagles)

FIFA RANKING: 48

WORLD CUP APPEARANCES: Nigeria has been to the World Cup 5 times previously, 1994,1998,2002,2010 and 2014 and reached the round of 16 in 1994, 1998 and 2014.

COACH: German Coach, Gernot Rohr will be leading the super eagles into this years world cup. He took charge of Nigeria in August 2016 and immediately revived their fortunes, with the Super Eagles qualifying for Russia 2018 with a game to spare.

STAR PLAYER: John Obi Mikel is the Nigerian frontman who will be leading the super eagles into the World Cup. The former Chelsea star is set to put on a spectacular performance this year.

Group D: Argentina, Iceland and Croatia.

 

4. SENEGAL (Teranga Lions)

FIFA RANKING: 27

WORLD CUP APPEARANCES: Senegal first qualified to the World Cup in 2002 where they put on a stellar performance to reach the Quarter Finals of the competition.

COACH: Senegalese local and captain of the Senegal side that made history at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, Aliou Cisse will take on the major task of helping Senegal make an impact at this year’s games.

STAR PLAYER: Liverpool star Sadio Mane who is known for his speed, skill set, and strength will prove himself to be a valuable asset to the Senegalese team.

Group H: Japan, Poland and Colombia.

 

5. TUNISIA.(Carthage Eagles)

FIFA RANKING: 21 (Highest African Country)

WORLD CUP APPEARANCES: Tunisia has been to the World Cup 4 times in 1978, 1998, 2002, 2006. They have never made it past the group stages.

COACH: Former Tunisia player Nabil Maaloul is the Head Coach of the Tunisian Team. Maaloul had already made his name as a coach by leading Esperance to the 2011 CAF Champions League title and was appointed as coach in April 2017.

STAR PLAYER: Attacking midfielder Wahbi Khazri has enjoyed the best season of his career so far during 2017/18 with French Ligue 1 side Rennes and was a key factor in Tunisia’s return to the world stage.
