Stella Nyanzi is a Ugandan activist fighting for free sanitary pads for the poor women in the country.
In her attempt to achieve her goal, Stella has been charged with ‘cyber harassment’ for calling Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni ‘a pair of buttocks’.
The academic has also been charged with ‘offensive communication’ and that her messages on Facebook disturb ‘the peace, quiet or right of privacy’ of the president.
The professor had also written this about the First Lady of the land in her quest for the free sanitary pad for the poor, a post on Facebook that got her suspended from her job as a researcher at Makerere University.
She will never be Mama Janet to me. I should visit her without protection during my next menstruation period, sit in her spotless sofas and arise after staining her soul with my menstrual blood! That will be my peaceful demonstration in solidarity with Uganda’s poor adolescent girls. Aluta continua!
See the letter of her charges below.
Stella Nyanzi’s team who are keeping her Facebook page running have visited her in prison.
According to a post on her page, the professor is teaching fellow inmates science and secondary school level English.
Stella says she is determined to make use of her stay in prison and won’t let the system break her.
