In Ghana, we all speak pidgin but the people of Takoradi have their own special slang that is different from most us all.
Their slang popularly referred to as “terms” is on a different level and very funny. It always makes you laugh when you hear them.
Here are a few:
1. When you hear someone shout “Azaaayy!!” in Takoradi, then he’s referring to you as a Friend
How to use it: “Oh! Azay!! aba dze na oko do?” meaning “Friend, what’s up”.
How to use it: “Ntse Paa Kwasi de, oye me papa a” to wit “Paa Kwasi is like a brother or is a brother”.
3. Matsekasa means you’ve heard whatever someone is saying to you.
How to use it: “Awo, don’t worry, matsekasa” to wit “don’t worry, I’ve heard you”
4. If a friend calls you and ask, “ebomu a?”, he’s asking if you’re around or home.
How to use it: “Azay!! Ebomu a?” meaning “my friend are you home?”
How to use it: “Awo, entse asi a, ma down” meaning “if you don’t agree, ignore it”
How to use it: “Jack opadi aborop” meaning “dude is angry”
How to use it: “Opadi, ehye yie a!!” meaning “Brother, everything cool”
How to use it: “Me mbeye mbeledi bia w’aha oh!” meaning “don’t try anything stupid here”
How to use it: “dem na obe ye dze a, mano down” meaning “if that’s what he wants to do, don’t mind him”.
10. The Ashanti man will say, burger, the Fanti man will say, Wa Drop.
How to use it: “Azay!! Opadi wa drop” meaning “Buddy, your brother just returned from Abroad”
How to use it: “Awo, yen try, obefa” meaning “let’s try, it shall be well”
How to use it: “Azay!!! Aba dze na oreko” to wit “Friend, what’s going on”
How to use it: “Azay!! Me huu w’akye oh! awo socket me a?” meaning “friend, it’s been a while, give me some money”
How to use it: “Onye sharp, kyikyire suan’ ” meaning “he’s not smart, lie to him”
