Kantamanto is the home of used clothes and accessories in Accra.
There are other stuff sold in and around the market but the dominant things are clothes and accessories. Life is not easy there and these pictures prove the hustle is real.

My brother Kofi has been on the market for a wife for just a few decades now. The richer he gets, the more choosy he becomes. Today, "I don't like this one's this. Tomorrow, "I don't like that one's that". Kofi my brother is looking for a brand new wife but exactly what he wants, only God knows. Or may be, Kofi wants what he can't have yet? Or may be Kofi is just happy all by himself? Or may be, the market is not the best place to look for a wife? Kofi my brother is in the market looking for a wife. But what is there to find, if he first doesn't find himself? Photo and Words by Nana Kofi Acquah (www.nkaphoto.com) @africashowboy (Copyright: 2016). #ACCRA #market #kantamanto

An outtake from my shoot with the lovely @indiraecheruo for #TimeOutAccra article on #AnAfricanCity written by bff @natashanyanin. We shot in the heart of #Kantamanto one of the largest used clothes (open air) markets in the world and one of my favorite gems in the city. Can't wait for you to see more images. #MyAccra #MsAdjeisTipsandTrips

Katamanto! Kantamanto is home to one of the largest thrift markets in West Africa. You can also get brand new original clothes & foot wears if you know someone there. If not, the brand new China ones (fake ones) are available too. Looking for some #bling? Few places compare in scale or variety to the expansive #Kantamanto #Market in Accra Central, the huge secondhand market (or "bend-down boutique") for clothes, shoes, bags, belts, household goods, and more. Clothes are imported from abroad by the pack, then sold to local vendors who in turn sell here or in various "boutiques" around the city. Your best bet is to head up here early (the hundreds of vendors are here as early as 6:30am!) and get ready to haggle with vendors for the best deals. This place isn't for the faint of heart, though: It takes some grit, determination and digging to find the best deals. So come wander the organized stalls and you can find some serious gems here, my friends, like the beautiful gold-colored low-top @converse Allstars that I scored here last year 🙂 There are some amazing items out here just waiting to be discovered; don't you agree, @steloolive @msadjei? #ACCxTSTMKRS #Africa #Ghana #markets #vintage #clothed #shopping #chale #converse #gems #gold #secondhand Posted by @africanurbanism
#Kantamanto #market #Accra #Ghana #watches #measure #time "It is at the edges that time thins. Time which had been dense and viscous as amber suspending intentions like bees unseizes them. A humming begins, apparently coming from stacks of put-off things or just in back. A racket of claims now, as time flattens. A glittering fan of things competing to happen, brilliant and urgent as fish when seas retreat." "The Edges of Time" –Kay Ryan
16. Spectacle frames are also sold there.
17. Waiting on customers like…
Kantamanto is a market place. A place to sell dreams. As a young fashion dealer, @paino_brew has big plans. Today, he sells from the metal gates of a closed down shop. To expand his business, he uses social media tools such as Instagram to advertise his goods and delivers to clients who call to purchase. The "KANTAMANTO" market appears like a maze at first; rows and columns of sellers staking out their spaces and selling their wares. There’s the indoor, covered market, the outside market spreading onto nearby walkways, and the vendors with stores in cemented structures. Just like a traditional department store in the West, Kantamanto too has its own sense of order, with specific sections of the market. Here, vendors specialize (selling a specific type of item), but they also agglomerate in clusters to draw the greatest traffic of potential customers. 19. This is how it goes down everyday.
It’s home to more than 30,00 traders, who sell most commonly secondhand and vintage clothing, but also spare parts, household decorations. The most immediate sounds of Kantamanto are the sellers working to attract their customers.“One, one cedi, belts, one, one cedi,” calls out a woman in a high-pitched voice, her feet and calves submerged in a colorful, knee-high pile of skinny belts. A seller hoists a wide bucket of water satchets over her head, weaving through the traffic of early morning customers. “Pure water!” she calls. 20. Porters to help carry your goods.
Afro District had a great expedition through the "Kantamanto" market, was so exciting and informative so we decided to write A piece on Ghana's Premium market "KANTAMANTO" . For more than 30 years now, the trading in Accra’s Kantamanto Market has contributed and linked in to the urban center’s economic productivity and vibrancy. Located near the Makola Market area behind Ghana Commercial Bank(GCB) building, Kantamanto is its own market, separate and distinct from Makola. -Kanta Chronicles- So I visited Kanta today and made some new friends. This is the shop of one of the amazing people I met. Kantamanto which is popularly called Kant or Kanta is one of the best and well known places for shopping in Accra. One can get both second hand and fresh clothes at affordable prices. It has been disturbed with fire outbreaks for sometime but it's still the Accra's favorite shopping spot. 23. Street preachers taking their share…
I went to kantamanto [flea market**] this morning and I saw about 9 different men of #god preaching. Each one had a collection box in front of him and this one kept on talking about money and hitting the box right by him. **is #kantamanto a flea market? 😊 #Jesus #church #market #pastor #Ghana #photooftheday #igersafrica #igersghana
24. A typical occurrence.
I really don't know who came up with the name but "Obroni wewu" actually means "Dead white man's stuff". Second hand clothing and stuff are called Obroni wewu in Ghana. The upper middle class and rich are normally too shy to come to the Kantamanto market to shop so they either send someone else with a shopping list or they get the sellers to package and deliver the goods in their homes or offices. A more friendly name for the shops where you get used clothing is "bend down boutique". #kantamanto #usedclothesmarket #ghana #marketscene Photo by Nana Kofi Acquah @africashowboy (Copyright: 2014).
26. Waiting to be unwrapped for sale.
Project Research at Kantamanto Market in Accra. Kantamanto is one of the largest second hand clothing markets in Africa. These bales are full of unwanted clothes from the West. Although they provide employment for many people, sellers have no idea as to what is in the bales. Employment is precarious and uncertain, highlighting the ever growing need for stable and ethical employment.
